Old Fashioned Chutney

  • Preparation time: 15 min
  • Cooking time: 45 min

  • Ingredients

  • 15 large apples
  • 4 oz (100g) salt
  • 8 oz (225g) tomatoes
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1½ lb brown sugar
  • 8 oz (225g) raisins, chopped
  • 1 oz (25g) ground ginger
  • 3 pints (1.7 L) brown vinegar
  • 4 oz (100g) Spanish onions
  • 1 oz (25g) garlic

  • Method

  • Peel and core the apples, and boil in the vinegar until quite soft.
  • Chop the onions and garlic finely and add to the apples with the other ingredients.
  • Boil for about 30 minutes, allow to cool before putting in jars.
